The government will give $500k for each of the 12 wards in Honiara City to carry out regular clean-up in the wards leading to the Pacific Games in November.

The $6m funding will be funneled through the Honiara City Council before it is dished to the wards once their work-plans are approved.

The work plans will have to be approved by the Government Services Integration Committee (GSIC), which HCC is a member.

Secretary to the Cabinet, Dr Jimmie Rodgers said this is one of the key areas that the government will be supporting HCC in.

He said under the programme, they want to see daily clean up programmes, a least two hours a day, in the wards by youth groups, women, schools and churches to clean Honiara.

Meanwhile the government has also agreed to support the HCC enforce its bye laws come May 1.

Dr Rodgers said the legal instruments are there but what is needed is the support for HCC to enforce them.

With the enforcement, the HCC will once again re-enforce the ‘on the spot fine’.
