The Government is confident that WHO approved vaccines that will be used in the country will protect people from covid-19.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said this to clarify concerns raised about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines, especially the AstraZeneca that arrives this Friday.

“My government is also concerned about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. However, we have great confidence in the fact that the World Health Organisation has approved the AstraZeneca vaccine,” he said.

Sogavare said that based on analysis of the side effects, the majority are minor and like those of other injectable medications, which has risk to people with multiple co-existing conditions.

Sogavare and other members of his cabinet are aware that every single vaccine ever produced have side effects, including those that we have routinely adopted for use in the country such as the measles vaccine.

The World Health Organisation has stated there is no reason at this stage to discontinue the use of AstraZeneca vaccines. To the contrary, it says AstraZeneca has contributed to the reduction of new COVID-19 cases.
