Men in custody for alleged rape of under-age girls

A 11-year-old girl who was watching movie on the mobile belonging to her uncle was allegedly raped by the same person (uncle) in her house at Tuvaruhu in Central Honiara. In another incident at Tasahe B, West Honiara, a drunken man had allegedly raped a 3-year-old girl after he had taken her to his canteen where he gave her twisties before allegedly raped her.

Commissioner of Police Mostyn Mangau revealed to journalists today of the incidents and both men have been arrested and charged with rape.

In the case at Tuvaruhu, Mangau stated that the girl was watching movie with her uncle, the defendant, on his mobile, when she was alleged raped.

The incident was witnessed by the girl’s sister who reported the matter to police. As a result, the Sexual Assault Team (SAT) arrested and charged a 38-year-old male person for allegedly raping the girl, 11, on 28October 2020.

In another separate incident, Managu said a 23-year-old man was also arrested last week for the alleged rape of a three-year-old.

The defendant who was reportedly drank at the time arrived home and approached the victim. He then carried the victim to his house where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

The defendant was interviewed and charged with one count of rape, contrary to section 136F (1) (a) & (b) of the Penal Code Cap 26 as amended by the Penal Code (Amendment) (Sexual Offences) Act, 2016.

Mangau appeals to parents to look after their young children especially girls to avoid such incidents.

He also pleas to the members of the community to respect young people and to report any abuses against them.
