Updated: The Ministry of Forestry and Research is aware of moves to illegally export tubi logs allegedly out of Isabel Province under the category of commercial species.

It is alleged that tubi logs harvested from San Jorge were loaded onto a logging vessel but were not declared as tubi in order to avoid export duty.

In response to queries from SBMOnline, the Forestry Office said the exporter had submitted two separate export permit applications — one for commercial species and another specifically for tubi.

“The commercial species application was approved, while the tubi application was held up because Forestry has no power under the FRTU Act to approve tubi export,” the office stated.

Forestry officials also confirmed that the Central Bank of Solomon Islands and Solomon Islands Customs and Excise Division have been notified about the matter.

According to the ministry, the company allegedly proceeded to use its approved export permit for commercial species and included tubi in documents submitted to Customs.

Forestry said the documents presented to Customs listed tubi logs, which was inconsistent with the original export permit application made to the ministry for commercial tree species under the Forest Resources and Timber Utilisation Act.

Based on those documents, the ministry believes the tubi logs were loaded illegally. However, officials say the ship has not yet departed the country.

“Forestry, in its capacity to uphold the law, has issued a cancellation notice for the company’s felling licence and also confiscated the felled tubi trees,” the ministry said.

The ministry added that a submission has also been made to the Attorney-General’s Chambers and they are currently awaiting further legal advice, particularly regarding the tubi issue.
