The Development Bank of Solomon Islands (DBSI) officially reopened its Malaita Provincial Branch in Auki this afternoon, marking a milestone return to the province after more than two decades.

Malaita Premier Elijah Asilaua described the reopening as “not just an expansion of services, but a transformative step for Malaita Province.”

The branch was officially declared open by the Governor of the Central Bank of Solomon Islands, Dr Luke Forau, flanked by Premier Asilaua and the Chair of the DBSI Board of Directors, Peter Sogoilo.

DBSI last operated in Auki more than 25 years ago before closing in 2004. The bank was later re-established under an Act of Parliament in 2019 as part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen development finance across the country.

Premier Asilaua said the branch now provides a vital financial gateway for Malaitans.

“This is for our farmers, our strong and hardworking men and women, our visionary entrepreneurs, and our youth who have long searched for opportunities to grow their dreams,” he said.

He acknowledged that access to finance has remained one of the biggest challenges confronting rural communities and small businesses across Solomon Islands.

“Too many promising ideas fail to materialise because people simply cannot access loans, advisory services, or financial products needed to begin or expand their ventures,” he said.
“This branch opens the door to hope. This branch strengthens our economic foundation.”

Acting DBSI Chief Executive Officer Stanley Havae said the opening of the branch signalled the bank’s commitment to rural development.

“As we open this new branch in Auki, we reaffirm our mandate to reach rural areas, provide flexible and accessible financial services, and bridge the gap between urban and rural communities,” Havae said.

He added that the Auki branch represents a significant milestone in DBSI’s journey to promote inclusive growth and development.

“Let us seize this opportunity to strengthen partnerships and work together towards a brighter future for Malaita and Solomon Islands as a whole.”

Meanwhile, Central Bank Governor Dr Luke Forau said the opening of the branch brings financial services closer to the people.

“Today marks more than the opening of a DBSI Branch in Auki. It is opening opportunity and symbolises inclusion,” Dr Forau said.

He noted Malaita’s strong potential for development.

“With its rich soils, strong cultural traditions and entrepreneurial spirit, Malaita is the perfect place for this investment.”

The bank will officially begin serving customers on Monday, 15 December.

DBSI officers said enquiries have already been received and staff are looking forward to serving the people of Malaita.
