Suva, 3rd Dec 2024 – The 21st Session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC21) meeting concluded today at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, Fiji.

The week-long gathering, which began on Thursday, 28th November, brought together Pacific nations to tackle key issues critical to the future of regional fisheries management.

Delegates engaged in rigorous discussions on topics including safeguarding tuna stocks, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and adopting essential financial and administrative recommendations through the FAC18 report.

On the final day, the commission made decisive moves to protect fisheries and ensure sustainable management practices while adopting measures designed to strengthen cooperation across CCMs.

In a key announcement, it was confirmed that Vanuatu will host the 22nd WCPFC Session in 2025, signaling the continuation of the region’s commitment to sustainable fisheries management.

For Solomon Islands, a nation heavily dependent on tuna fisheries, these decisions are vital for preserving one of its most valuable resources. Sustainable management not only secures the future of the tuna industry but also sustains jobs, provides food security, and bolsters community incomes. // Ends
