They are the ones who made the fundraiser happen. One of the most loved wantok artist Charles Maimarosia who wanted to give the forgiveness song to his people during their time of great sorrow as a tribute towards the fundraising for his people during this tragic time to ask for forgiveness.”
“On Saturday the 4 of April 2020, a ferry disaster caused by Tropical Cyclone Harold led to 27 people who were on the top deck to be thrown overboard. The passengers were departing the capital Honiara on the MV Taimareho under a government program to evacuate people to their home villages in fear for safety due to the global COVID-19 epidemic. Most of the passengers were students who were returning home. Some of Charles’ nephews, niece were amongst those who have drowned.”
Mr Maimarosia says, “Whilst we appreciate that times are tough for everyone at present due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we would like to fundraise an appropriate amount of money to support victims’ families in this tragic time.”
Charlie has recorded a song ‘AMAMAMIURU (Forgiveness) that he wished to make available online in return for donations to this cause.  Any donations made to this campaign will receive an mp3 of the song. Donations over AUD$25 will also receive a download code for Charlie’s’ EP, ‘Are’Are’.
Mr Maimarosia says, “It would be greatly appreciated if those who have the means can offer a small gesture of support to our close neighbours in the Solomon Islands.”
He says, “The wantok musik foundation is a not-for-profit Music Label that records, releases and promotes culturally infused music from Indigenous Australia, Melanesia and the broader Oceania region. Wantok Music raises the local and international profile of Indigenous and world music groups based in the region, and provides greater economic opportunity for artists and long-term career sustainability. Artists represented include George Telek from Papuan New Guinea (PNG), Charles Maimarosia (Solomon Islands), Kaumaakonga KMK (Solomon Islands), Tio (Vanuatu), Frank Yamma (Australia) and Emily Wurramara (Australia).” Also let me thank both Paul Aihunu and Fred Suhara for their support for safe hand over of the donation and in producing materials for publication.
The local artist Mr Maimarosia says, “The minimal assistance to victims relatives after such a tragic loss is always a wake up call to come together and give all the assistance they can get. On that note, I would like to thank individual donors for their valued donations towards this cause.”
