The Solomon Islands Christian Association in a letter this week to the Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has strongly objected to the proposed direct flight from Honiara to China and return.
SICA which makes up of the major churches in the country which accounts for about 90 precent of the population said in the letter: “During the SICA Executive meeting held at the Chancery Office of the Catholic Church, Holy Cross, 4th August 2020, those SICA members present strongly objected the flight to ever take place during these trying times for our country.”
It continues: “SICA thinks that it is imprudent to allow a charter flight to go to China at this time. If the realization of the flight is to get Solomon Islands ready for the 2023 South Pacific Games, we think the safety of our people from the Shortland, in the west to Temotu, in the east is MORE IMPORTANT than the South Pacific Games.”
The letter was signed by the Archbishop of Catholic, Christopher Cadone; Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia Leonard Dawea; Bishop Lima of the South Seas Evangelical Church (SSEC), Rev Leslie Vedoko of the United Church and Holmes Saeve, General Secretary Solomon Islands Christian Association.
The Opposition Group and Transparency Solomon Islands have already expressed their opposition to the direct flight.
The flight is scheduled for 29 of this month direct to China and returns to Honiara by the national carrier Solomon Airlines.
