Solomon Islands Calls for Inclusive Global Governance of AI

Solomon Islands recognizes the need for an inclusive and transparent international governance framework on artificial intelligence (AI), Prime Minister Matthew Wale has told the United Nations General Assembly.

Wale said AI and emerging technologies present both unprecedented opportunities and serious risks, with the potential to accelerate sustainable development, transform education and healthcare, strengthen disaster preparedness and open new economic pathways for developing countries.

However, he warned that a widening digital divide could leave developing countries further behind.

“For my government, digital transformation is not about technology for its own sake; it is about connecting our scattered islands and opening the modern economy to every Solomon Islander,” Wale said.

He highlighted the completion of 161 telecommunications towers across Solomon Islands, which will increase national broadband coverage from 56 to 86 per cent and expand access to information, education and digital financial services.

Wale stressed that the benefits of AI must be shared broadly rather than concentrated among a few, while its risks—including its use for non-peaceful purposes—must be governed collectively.

“Solomon Islands therefore recognizes the need for an inclusive and transparent international governance framework on AI,” he said.
