Central Islands Province has elected a new premier. He is Kenneth Sagupari, the MPA for Ward 2 Central West Ngella.
Sagupari, 35, defeated David Manetiva of Ward 12 by 8-4 votes in the premiership vote this afternoon in Tulagi.
“Yes, my team won,” Sagupari told SBM few moments after being elected.
Speaker of the CIP Hon. Francis Moah confirmed to SBM that Sagupari was elected with 8 votes, Manetiva 4 whilst one vote was spoilt.
Moah said the election ran very smoothly.
Sagupari was instrumental in the ousting of former premier Michael Salini in a motion of no confidence last week.
Being the mover of the MONC, Sagupari was named as the candidate for the Non-Executive Members for the position of premier.
Speaking to SBM, Sagupari said: “It is now time citizens of Central Province to come together to move our province forward.”
“Time for silence is over, we must take pride of who we are and stand tall to move the province forward,” said the newly elected premier,” he said.
“As your premier I ask all elites of Central Province to come forward to share our common vision and move Central Province away from stagnancy and complacency syndrome that entangled our province for so long,” he said in his first public statement.
Former premier Salini spent just a year as the premier before being removed last week.
