OPPOSITION Leader Hon Matthew Wale has criticized what he perceived to be a blatant conflict of interest with regards to the roadwork contract for the Lau/Mbaelelea Constituency.

Documents reaching the Office of the Leader of Opposition has revealed that a total of SBD $4,301,950 was paid to Rao’ofua Construction, a company co-owned by the Member for Lau/Mbaelelea.

According to these documents, 3 payments were made between June and November 2022 for road works in the Lau/Mbaelelea Constituency.

Hon. Wale said that such documents reveal a clear conflict of interest and potential corruption that must be investigated.

“This is gravely concerning. Paying millions to a member of Parliament’s own company to operate within his own constituency is a serious abuse of office,” Hon. Wale said.

The Opposition Leader has also questioned the company’s expertise in roadwork maintenance and if it had gone through the normal tender process.

Hon Wale said the allegations are troubling but not surprising as it reflects the trait of the current government.

He said these kinds of conduct by members of the DCGA further erode what little trust people have in their government.

The Opposition Leader has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into these allegations.

“I urge the relevant authorities, including anti-corruption agencies and oversight bodies, to conduct an impartial enquiry on this matter,” Hon Wale said.

Company Haus records indicate that Rao’ofua Construction is owned by Augustine Auga Maeue, with a registered address at Burnscreek.
