Voting in the South Choiseul Constituency by-election closed at 5pm today and counting will start tomorrow at 1pm. Returning officer Henry Deva told the national radio that the result is expected tomorrow night.
Six candidates contested the seat, they were: Jackson Kiloe – People First Party, Sammy Qalo – Independent, Luxton Bauro Koraua – Independent, Tozen Leokana – Independent, Naneeth Tutua – Independent and Amos Papaqui Qurusu – Independent.
The seat became vacant after former MP, Robert Qalokale was ousted in a petition after the high court found him guilty of corruption charges during the 2019 National General Election.
Qalokale was amongst three other MPs in the current house that lost their seats via petitions.
Media reports from South Choiseul said there were good turn out— though some voters had showed up to some polling stations and had not seen their names. Pictures on social media showed voters lining up early in the polling stations to cast their ballots.
The result is expected tomorrow night.
Meanwhile two by-elections were also held today. The by-election for Kirugela ward in East Choiseul was necessary following the death of its MPA while the MPA for Anuta Tikopia ward was terminated.
