Travellers in Malaita are urging the government to quickly replace a temporary bridge before any costly accident occurs.

The Anonakiaki temporary bridge on the border of central Kwara’ae and West Kwaio was built by Catholics around the area only to help them access Auki during an ordination on Saturday.

There used to be a culvert in place of the bridge but that had been damaged and washed away during the recent bad weather. The bridge is only a temporary link and is not capable of holding daily traffic on the south road.

“May I call on responsible authorities to do something about this bridge because it’s very dangerous and not safe for the travelling public,” said Fr. Clement Wane, the director of Buma Pastoral Centre in West Kwaio.

He said because of the nature of the bridge (safety standard) they will remove it this week.

“Responsible authorities must act now before people die on the bridge,” he said.
