The MP for East Honiara, Morris Toiraena, has urged his colleagues to change the spirit of the Parliament which he describes as viewed by the people as a house with the spirit of influence, self-serving and corruption.

The newly elected MP for East Honiara used his experience in the first eight months in parliament to openly expressed his views in the just recently concluded sitting.

“From the perspective of our people, the house has a spirit inside. When they see someone comes into the house, even if he is a priest or pastor, they know the person would be corrupt. They know the person would be self-serving. They know the person would be womanizing, and that’s how people paint parliamentarians because of the culture that was set with the house for the past terms up until today.”

He added the spirit of influence, spirit of self- serving, spirit of corruption comes with the power that “we have in our hands”.

Toiraena stressed that this term (current parliament) should be different because there are 25 new MPs who came into the house to join the 25 good ones that returned.

“So, this house should be a totally new house, our people want to see change. They have voted for change. From them they say, there must be change,” the MP for East Honiara, stated.

He added people voted for this term to be different and not as past years.

“Don’t forget we come here with common vision, vision of our people on why they elected 25 new MPs’ into the house. Their vision is a vision to be different, to serve faithfully, to make a difference and not to allow the spirit of the past to haunt you and me, for we are here for a mission,” said Toiraena.

The MP for East Honiara hoped that in 2025, they would reset and set new directions, different from the past eight months.
