The 2019 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) will be marked in Honiara on the 9th of December.
The Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC) will host the event in partnership with national Integrity and accountability institutions such as Solomon Islands National University (SINU), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI) and Development Services Exchange (DSE) at the National Museum Auditorium from 8:00am to 1:30pm under the theme ‘United Against Corruption’.
The official program will commence with the keynote address from the Prime Minister Hon. Mannesah Sogavare, MP, followed by a panel discussion on topics relating to anti-corruption.
A statement from the IACD 2019 Organising committee said that Corruption is a crosscutting issue that affects all countries around the world including Solomon Islands.
The IACD is a day when people, institutions and organizations who share common sentiments about corruption and its effects can come out together in numbers to rally support against corruption.
The statement further stated that Corruption undermines democracy, creates unstable governments, and is a setback to any economy.
“The onus to address corruption is on each and every citizens to address it, and not only for responsible authorities like the Government, Judiciary, Police, Non-Governmental Organizations, Private Sector and media to address,” the statement reads.
The IACD will begin with a ‘Walk against Corruption’, parade from the Honiara City Council (parking space) to the National Museum.
As a lead up to the event, there will be a public forum held at SINU this Wednesday followed by a talkback show this Saturday.
This is for the purpose to keep public engaged and inform on what corruption is and the effects, the ways to better address corruption, and understanding of integrity institutions followed by a radio talkback show via the national broadcaster, SIBC. “Come December 9, we call on members of the public, youth groups, media organisations, business houses, development partners, academic institutions, NGOs and faith-based organizations to make yourselves count against corruption and be part of the IACD public event at the National Museum Auditorium to raise public awareness on the impact of corruption and what people can do to fight it.” The statement added.
