Solomon Islands Electoral Commission Clarifies Campaigning Guidelines

The SIEC emphasizes that according to the Electoral Act 2018, campaigning in all forms is permitted up until 24 hours before polling day. This includes but is not limited to rallies, speeches, and public parades.

A recent news article in the Island Sun Newspaper erroneously suggested that SIEC had advised against float parades in the Honiara City. The SIEC clarifies that decisions regarding public floats and parades fall under the rightful jurisdiction of the Honiara City Council and the Royal Solomon Islands Police, not the SIEC.

It is crucial for all stakeholders, including candidates, political parties, and the media, to adhere to the Electoral Act 2018 and conduct campaigns within the legal framework. The SIEC urges the media to verify information before publishing to ensure accuracy and to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

“SIEC never issued any advice against campaigns or float parades in the Honiara City,” According to the SIEC statement.

“We encourage all eligible voters to exercise their rights by casting their ballots on April 17th, 2024, and urge everyone involved to conduct themselves with respect for the rule of law and each other’s choices.”

The Solomon Islands Electoral Commission is an independent Constitutional institution responsible for administering free, fair, and credible elections in the Solomon Islands, in accordance with the country’s laws and regulations.
