HONIARA, Solomon Islands – The Solomon Islands Council of Trade Unions (SICTU) is calling on the Chair of the Public Accounts Committee to initiate a special hearing to investigate the recent findings of possible misappropriation in the COVID-19 Economic Stimulus Package audit report released by the Office of the Auditor General.

The audit report highlighted concerning irregularities in the utilization of funds allocated for the economic stimulus package, raising serious questions about potential mismanagement and misuse of public resources during a critical time of need for the Solomon Islands small businesses.

As a crucial oversight body responsible for ensuring transparency and accountability in government expenditure, the Public Accounts Committee plays a vital role in safeguarding the interests of the public. SICTU urges the PAC chair and Committee to promptly launch a thorough investigation into the audit findings and hold those responsible for any misappropriation or misconduct accountable.

The Solomon Islands Council of Trade Unions is committed to upholding good governance practices and advocating for the fair and ethical management of public funds.

SICTU is delaying its call on Director of Public Prosecutions to respond promptly to referral until LLC, SIICAC and police complete its hearings and investigations.

SICTU believe establishing a parliamentary special select committee or parliamentary standing committee will take time.

For this reason SICTU call for PAC to commence hearing and present its finding to Parliament, public and office of Director of public Prosecution.
