Thursday 4 February, Honiara – The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) congratulates the new Interim Commissioner of the Telecommunications Commissioner of Solomon Islands (TCSI), Mr Calvin Ziru, on his appointment.

A statement issued by the SICCI today (Thursday 4 February, 2021) said: “The telecommunication industry has fundamentally changed how people and businesses communicate. A lot has been achieved, but a lot remains to be done and the Chamber looks forward to working supportively with the new Interim Commissioner to achieve his plan for the Commission.”

“Now with an Interim Commissioner in place, the Chamber believes TCSI is in a better position to fulfill and carry out its statutory obligations and duties in a more effective manner as a regulator of telecommunication service providers in the country,” the statement added.

Minister of Communications and Aviation, Hon Peter Shannel Agovaka made the appointment of Mr Ziru official on 29th January 2021 following a recommendation from TCSI’s Technical Evaluation Committee.

SICCI, as the peak body representing private sector, is represented on this committee by its Chairman, Mr Jay Bartlett.

The SICCI statement further highlights the importance of telecommunication and ICT as an important tool for businesses.

“Telecommunication and ICT enables companies to communicate effectively with customers and deliver high standards of customer service. It is also a key element in teamwork, facilitating effective communications amongst employees to collaborate easily from wherever they are located.”

As a Chamber, SICCI believes that with the recent delivery of the Coral Sea Submarine Cable system and further increased accessibility and usage of the internet, it is important that our Laws and Regulations are amended to ensure it can be effectively managed.

“The Chamber believes that TCSI as a body can play a vital role in supporting important stakeholders including the Government in legislative reforms that will ensure people using telecommunication services including social media platforms are held accountable.

“TCSI as the regulator also plays an important role in managing and enabling the telecommunications sector to develop in an inclusive manner for the Solomon Islands,” the SICCI statement concluded.
