
Solomon Islands reaffirmed its bilateral relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) at a bilateral meeting between the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Jeremiah Manele, and the Special Envoy H.E Qian Bo to the Pacific Islands, in the margins of the 52nd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

Foreign Minister Manele used the opportunity to acknowledge the People Republic of China’s unwavering commitment in strengthening their bilateral relations with Solomon Islands, highlighting the growth in bilateral relations into various areas of development and tangible projects, including on infrastructure, development cooperation, governance, and health.
The Minister informed the Special Envoy on Solomon Islands preparations to host the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara in 12 days’ time, and commended China for the support towards Solomon Islands sporting infrastructures and facilities.
The meeting also discussed possibilities to establish sister-relations with cities and towns between both countries on the basis of share knowledge and best practices, as well as opportunities for technical and capacity building.
The bilateral meeting also discussed the opportunities for trade and investment between the two countries, to which the Foreign Minister conveyed Solomon Islands private sector’s keen interest to establish a trade cooperation to explore export opportunities.
Solomon Islands also acknowledged the People’s Republic of China for their contributions to the development priorities of the Pacific region and encouraged China’s continued cooperation to support the regional priorities based on the 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy.
The Foreign Minister reaffirmed Solomon Islands close cooperation with the People’s Republic of China, on the basis of mutual cooperation and aspirations on the development front.
