RSIPF appeals for understanding and cooperation of public

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) appeals to all people living in Solomon Islands to observe whatever regulations and orders issued under the State of Public Emergency (SoPE) declared by the Governor General H.E. Sir David Vunagi on 25 March 2020 as the Government puts in place measures to prevent any outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The Emergency Powers (COVID-19) Regulations 2020 have been gazetted by the Solomon Islands Government today.
“As the law enforcement agency in Solomon Islands, the RSIPF has a key role to play in both supporting the implementation of public health measures to contain any possible outbreak of the COVID-19 in the country and preventing specific criminal activities arising from the implementation of the orders,” says Acting Commissioner of Police, Mostyn Mangau.
He explains: “There will be heavy penalties including fines and imprisonment for anyone who disobeys the orders that are being issued by the Government. I call on everyone to study the orders carefully and adhere to them faithfully. Let us cooperate with the Government as it put in place orders that will prevent any possible entry of the COVID-19 into Solomon Islands. These orders should not be seen as draconian but necessary to protect us all from this pandemic virus.”
“In order to ensure there is an increased policing presence in our communities, I have directed that all annual leave for officers be suspended for an indefinite period. I would like to also thank the Government, donor countries and organisations for continuing their assistance to the RSIPF to ensure it carries out its role as the law enforcement agency in Solomon Islands during these difficult times. I would like to thank the Australian Solomon Islands Police Development Program (SIPDP), the New Zealand Solomon Islands Police Support Program and Australian Defense for their continuing support for the RSIPF.”
“Let us all work together so our country can go through this challenge we all face. Let us follow whatever measures the Government put into place. Let us have the full understanding and cooperation of our people,” Acting Commissioner Mangau emphasizes.
Acting Commissioner Mangau adds: “Let us remain calm and not spread false information about the COVID-19 but listen to information that is being disseminated from the Government authorities authorized to deal with this virus.”
