The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) strongly appeals to the public in Honiara and in the provinces to respect police safety equipment.

The appeal is made after an incident occurred in Honiara after a youth had been taken to the Naha Police Station in East Honiara after his right wrist had been locked with the RSIPF SAF- lock handcuff.

SBMOnline understands that the handcuff was kept in the house by one of its occupants. However, when the boy saw it he picked it and played with it which accidentally locked his hand. The residents of the house could not open the handcuff so they took the boy to Naha Police Station who was further transported to Rove where PRT officers were able to unlock it โ€“ and released him. SBMOnline can reveal that only the PRT has keys for its handcuffsโ€” and any attempts to unlock them would cause harm.

Police Commissioner Mostyn Mangau says, โ€œPolice safety equipment is the property of the RSIPF and only police officers are trained and authorized under the Police Act to use them during their times of duty. Members of the public are not allowed to use those equipment as some of them are dangerous.โ€

Commissioner Mangau says, โ€œAny sightings of these police safety equipment in your homes should be returned it to the police or any nearest police station.โ€
