Police have confirmed that a single UXO removed today at Honiara Central Market was safe, and of no concern to public and market users.
The remains of a single used or spent World War 2 ordnance was uncovered during a standard UXO survey as part of preparation work for the expansion of the western end of the market.

A representative from Australia’s Solomon Islands Infrastructure Program (SIIP), which is overseeing works, said that in accordance with set safety procedures, works
were immediately stopped and the RSIPF Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was contacted.
“RSIPF attended the site, confirmed there was absolutely no risk of explosion from the single used shell. They subsequently returned and have now removed the shell.”

Local contractor Tropic Group Builders will complete the UXO survey before any excavation and construction takes place.
UXO surveys are a normal practice in Solomon Islands due to the high level of activity in the area during WW2. SIIP confirmed that the safety of all workers and members of the public was a number one focus during the construction process.
