Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) have cleared Shortland Islanders travelling back from Bougainville on 29 November under the traditional Border Crossing on the revised basic border treaties signed between Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
The border treaties were signed on August 2019 in Gizo Western Province to manage safe and secure movement for border communities in the Shortland Islands and part of Choiseul Province.
Police Forward Command Post (PFCP) Tactical Commander, Kulitanai Inspector Kerry Siriheti says, “The arrival clearance was done at the Harapa police out post in the North West of Shortland Islands. I see this as a positive implementation of the treaties by the people of Shortland Islands.”
RSIPF is providing support for Immigration and Customs to ensure that the traditional border crossing process is peacefully and lawfully administered.
“Police are closely monitoring the Bougainville Referendum to ensure Bougainvilleans returning home after casting their votes in the Referendum are processed under the revised basic border treaties signed between Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea,” says PCP Inspector Siriheti.
