Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has unveiled this year’s 44th Independence Anniversary theme following a number of suggestions from the Organizing Committee.

This year’s theme is “Iumi Tugeda for a Stronger and Peaceful Solomon Islands”.

The theme calls for all Solomon Islands citizens to unite as fellow country men and women of the “happy Isles” to build the country into a stronger and peaceful place for everyone.

This year’s celebrations will be low key due to financial constraints exacerbated by the covid-19 pandemic on government finances.

There will be no anniversary parade and other associated activities at Lawson Tama stadium.

However, there will be a float parade by the Police Band, Cultural groups, students and other selected groups in the morning of 7th July from White River to the Maranatha Hall in Burns Creek to be followed by a thanksgiving service.

The Prime Minister’s national address will be broadcasted live on radio and Television on 7th July.

The organizing committee is encouraging communities around the country to organize their own celebrations to commemorate this year’s anniversary.

In Honiara, a String Band concert is organized and will be live broadcasted and streamed online by the National Broadcaster SIBC.

Solomon Islands gained Independence from Great Britain on July 7th 1978.
