Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare today reiterated his call for 40 gold medals at the 2023 Pacific Games declaring a PG2023 battle cry of … “Go Forty” – for at least 40 Gold Medals in Honiara come 2023.
Prime Minister Sogavare had not shy away since declaring last year of his dream for Solomon Islands to win 40 gold medals at the home Pacific Games.
Today at the ground-breaking ceremony to official kick start the construction of the National Stadium for the Pacific Games by repeating his call for 40 Gold medals.
He said: “Our success at the games will not only be measured by the great facilities we prepared, or the best hosting arrangements we may accomplish. No, the measure that the population of this nation will assess our success against is the number of medals we win in our own home soil when we host the Pacific Games in 2023 – hence our PG2023 battle cry of … ‘Go Forty’ – for at least 40 Gold Medals.”
He said the facilities that “we are here today to be part of their ground-breaking, are the beginning of the new chapter in our country’s sporting history – a history that we can all be proud to have been a part of.”
“A history that defines the future of sports in our country, and importantly, a history that defines who we are as a people, and as a country,” he said.
“To all our sports people throughout the country, to all the sports federations, the National Olympics Committee of Solomon Islands, and the National Sports Council – let me challenge you all to prepare well, as we journey toward the 2023 Pacific Games,” he said.
The ground breaking ceremony was held today at the former SIFF Academy to formally start construction on the main stadium to host the games.
The 10,000 capacity stadium will be the key venue for the games and is funded by the Chinese Government.
