The Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele today announced two key projects for Choiseul Province that his government will undertake this year.

He told journalists at a press conference that these projects are part of his government’s commitment to the province and also a new approach that will be taken by GNUT to deliver on the promises that are made to provincial governments during second appointed day celebrations.

The two projects include a $19m urgent renovation and repair work of the provincial hospital at Taro. And, the government has also just elevated the Choiseul Bay township project to be a national project.

Manele said his government is committed to delivering on commitments made during provincial government (second appointed day) celebrations.

He said the prime minister often gets invited to second appointed day celebration in each province.

“From this year, prior to each visit, we will conduct an assessment of previous commitments made during past events. We will send an advance party to each province to work with and identify key priorities that the province wishes that the  central government to support— so that the PM or his delegate in the event can provide another update on GNUT’s actions on the progress of the commitments or on new commitments to be announced,” he said.

Manele cited the recent Second Appointed Day celebrations in Choiseul as an example.

He said at the celebrations the province shared with the DPM (Hon Tovosia) and the minister for provincial government of the debilitated state of the Taro Hospital which needs urgent attention.

Manele said the DPM and the minister took the issue to cabinet seeking immediate action so that government urgently mobilize resources to renovate, and, repair refurbish the main provincial hospital for Choiseul province.

The PM confirmed that as a result, his government has submitted a funding request with a development partner to fund the upgrade work estimated at $19m.

Manele said they anticipate work to commence this year and if possible— also completed by the end of 2025.

Manele also confirmed that the the government has also just elevated Choiseul Baytownship project to be a national project.

“The time has come to demonstrate unity and transformmission.
We must walk the talk, we must come together as one people unite to build, our country,” he said.

The PM further stated that the elevation of the Choiseul Bay Township project was based on a resolution reached between the DPM and the Premier of Choiseul Province during second appointed Day.

Taro town is currently situated on Taro island but the new Choiseul provincial headquarter will be built on the mainland at Choiseul Bay.

Meanwhile, Manele said GNUT will apply the same approach with Choiseul Province  for the upcoming second appointed day to our provinces throughout the year.
