North New Georgia registers lower candidates, East Makira highest

ELECTION CORNER:

Former Leader of the Independent Group John Kuku is the only candidate facing the lowest opposition in next month’s National General Election, with just one MP facing him for the North New Georgia constituency in the Western Province.

He runs against female Independent candidate Nanette Anne Tutua. Kuku runs under Solomon Islands Democratic Party.

In contrast, one of the former four female MPs’ Lilly Maefai will contest against 16 other candidates in East Makira constituency. East Makira registered the highest number of candidates in the NGE with 17 vying for the seat.

Caretaker foreign minister Jeremiah Manele faces two other candidates for the Hograno/Kia/Havulei seat in one of the few constituencies with the second lowest. The other being Samuel Manetoali in Gao/Bugotu also on Isabel.

Also with three candidates is the East Are’are seat where United Party Leader Peter Kenilorea Jr. will compete against two others and so as his colleague UP candidate Claudius Te’eifi in West Kwaio. Former West Honiara MP Namson Tran is another who will defend his seat against two others, one of them being a former mayor of Honiara City Wilson Mamae.
