MOU signed for country’s newest Oil Palm company

The country’s second Palm Oil Plantation is on the way following a landmark signing agreement for the establishment of the new plantation at Vella la Vella in the Western Province.

It will be called the Qula Basin Oil Palm.

A leader on the island and Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) for Ward 7 Vonunu, Rence Sore, confirmed to SBMOnline this morning following the signing ceremony.

 He wrote by confirming that following the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was signed by the Solomon Islands Government’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) and the People’s Republic of China (PRC’s) Shanghai Weiheng Construction Engineering Company Limited in December 28, 2024, and following the approval of Solomon Islands Government (SIG’s) Cabinet for Vella la Vella Oula Basin Oil Palm Development Project in February 6, 2025, the Reresare Tribe Forest Limited of Vella la Vella, led by Chief Jonathan Dive, signed the Implementation Agreement for Vella la Vella Oula Basin Oil Palm Development Project with the Chinese Investor, yesterday, in Honiara.

The signing was facilitated by SIG’s Cabinet Subcommittee on Vella la Vella Oula Basin Oil Palm Development Project.

The Subcommittee is chaired by Hon Chachabule Rebi Amoi, MP, of Marovo Constituency.

The planation will be established in the boundary of North and South Vella la Vella Constituency, a bigger portion of the land is in North Vella which is represented by Clezy Rore in Parliament.

 So, what’s next?

The Implementation Agreement states that the Reresare Tribe Forest Ltd hold consultation meetings with directors, elders, and members of the Reresare Tribe on Vella la Vella Qula Basin Palm Oil Development Project and also consultation meetings in Honiara, Gizo and on Vella la Vella Island.

Furthermore, the Solomon Islands Government will assist Reresare Tribe to conduct, facilate the consultation meetings.

Similarly, the implementation agreement agrees that the Shanghai Weiheng Construction Engineering Company Ltd will conduct a comprehensive technical and suitability study of Vella la Vella Basin Palm Oil Development Project, establish Vella la Vella Qula Basin Palm Oil Development Project Office in Honiara and assist SIG and the Reresare Tribe Forest Ltd in the performance of activities that are agree in the MOU.

Once established, it will be the second palm oil company in the Solomon Islands after Guadalcanal Plains Palm Oil Ltd in Guadalcanal.
