The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) has confirmed that more girls have graduated this year compared to boys at the tertiary level.

Permanent Secretary Dr. Franco Roddie told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) during scrutiny of the 2026 Appropriation Bill that this year’s graduation outcomes from both the University of the South Pacific (USP) and the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) show female students outperforming male students.

Although he did not disclose the exact figures, Dr. Roddie said the data clearly shows that “more girls are graduating than boys,” adding that the trend is evident at both USP and SINU.

He attributed the shift to increased gender-balance awareness and changing attitudes among modern Solomon Islands families, who are investing more equally—and in many cases more deliberately—in the education of their daughters.

Dr. Roddie also revealed that a total of 346 students have graduated this year, while 2,218 students are continuing their tertiary studies.
