MHMS Supports By-Election Preparations

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) continues providing support to various organizations, institutions and groups to incorporate COVID-19 precautionary measures into their planned activities and ongoing operations as part of its efforts against COVID-19.

This week support is being rendered to the Solomon Islands Electoral Office (SIEO) with its preparations for the upcoming by-elections in a three days electoral training workshop for election managers and returning officers in Honiara.

The training was furnished with an overview of COVID-19, global and regional updates, current national health efforts etc. COVID-19 Risk Communication Plan and existing COVID-19 Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials and Infection, Prevention and Control (IPC) measures.

MHMS Permanent Secretary Mrs. Pauline McNeil says the Ministry is pleased to support preparations for the by-election. “We are pleased to be supporting the electoral office in its preparations for the by-election and will continue to work closely with them when needed up till the completion of the election process”.

She explains, “this is because while the ministry’s current efforts is with building capacities and capabilities of the provincial health teams and communities to prepare and respond to COVID-19 the Ministry is also aware of the need to also support specific groups, organizations etc. in their planned activities and ongoing operations. In this case, the electoral office with its preparations for upcoming by-election”.  

She stated that empowering ourselves with the knowledge of COVID-19, its preventative measures and incorporating these into the planned activities and ongoing operations of our organizations, groups and so forth is one of the effective ways to ensure that we continue to protect ourselves from the virus.

“On this note, I wish to acknowledge the electoral office for reaching out to us for the support and we also look forward to working with other government ministries, agencies, organizations, institutions who may require our support in this regard. Let’s all keep the momentum of cooperation, collaborating and partnering in our efforts against COVID-19,” stated Mrs. McNeil.

At the training, MHMS’s Health Emergencies and International Health Regulation Advisor, Dr Yogesh Choudhri presented an overview of COVID-19, health promotion officers Beverly Ramo and Kelton Sikala on COVID-19 Information, Education and Communication Materials and National Referral Hospital’s IPC team leader George Lui on IPC measures.
