Met office issues severe cyclone warning

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Services (SIMS) has issued a cyclone warning following heavy rain and strong wind that continue to batter parts of the country since last week.

In its latest weather forecast bulletin as of this morning, SIMS says a tropical cyclone warning is current for Temotu province.

“At 11:00 pm last night, Tropical Cyclone Rita (category one) with a central pressure of 995 hectopascals was located near 10.7 degrees latitude south and 169.2 degrees longitude east. This is re-located approximately 67 nautical miles (123 kilometres) northwest of Anuta Island, temotu province.

“Cyclone Rita is moving east-southeast at 08 knots towards Anuta island and strengthening.

“Gale force winds of 34 to 47 knots (63-87 kilometres per hour) are expected to affect Temotu province with rough seas and moderate to heavy swells (2.5 – 4.0 metres) and potential coastal flooding.    

“Expect winds of 15 to 25 knots (27- 46 kilometres per hour) with moderate to rough seas over the remaining provinces.

“Rain will be heavy with squally thunderstorms over Temotu province.”

SIMS advises people to take precautionary measures as bad weather associated with the tropical cyclone poses threat to lives and properties.
