In the heart of Honiara, a remarkable journey unfolds – one that embodies resilience, passion, and the power of dreams. Hency Charles, a spirited individual with roots in the picturesque North East Malaita province, is a testament to how determination and a fervent commitment to youth empowerment can pave the way to a brighter future.

From Tamone Village to the Heart of Honiara

Hency’s story begins in the tranquil surroundings of Tamone Village, nestled along the Lungga River in East Honiara. Raised in a loving family, he recalls how his father instilled a deep sense of faith and community in him from a young age. Every Sabbath, the family would gather at the Burn Creek SDA Church for worship, setting the foundation for a spiritual journey that would shape Hency’s life.

At the tender age of 10, Hency embarked on a transformative path as he joined the Pathfinders, a group dedicated to nurturing the holistic development of young minds. As he grew older, he transitioned into the youth group, where he was further moulded into the person he is today. Hency reflects fondly on how his church community played a pivotal role in shaping his character and values.

Education Challenges: A Stepping Stone, Not a Barrier

Despite facing financial constraints that limited his educational pursuits, Hency refused to let adversity define his future. He firmly believed that opportunities would come knocking, and he was prepared to welcome them with open arms.

One such opportunity arose through the Y-Fin Duke of Edinburgh Youth Award program, introduced by Elwin Taloimatakwa. Joining the Youth Division of the Honiara City Council through this program marked a turning point in Hency’s life. Here, he immersed himself in youth development activities and capacity-building programs that expanded his horizons.

Through these empowering initiatives, Hency’s dedication and resilience led him to study Certificate IV in Youth Work with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition in Vanuatu. Armed with newfound knowledge and passion, he returned to Honiara ready to make a difference.

Building Strength in Body and Spirit

Hency’s journey took an exciting turn as he found his calling as a physical fitness trainer. His journey in this field commenced during his studies in Vanuatu, where he discovered a profound passion for physical fitness.

For six years, he poured his heart and soul into his role at the Honiara City Council gymnasium. His dedication later led him to the RSIPF Health and Wellness Fitness Center, under the AFP/RAPPP program, where he trained officers to be strong and fit for their duties. The opportunity to contribute to the health and well-being of those who serve the community resonated deeply with Hency.

“Taking on the role of a fitness instructor in the law enforcement team is a big chance for me. I’m dedicated to working with the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Physical Fitness Team. Our goal is to promote healthy living, provide advice on nutrition, check everyone’s health status, create workout plans, and lead exciting training sessions. Together, we aim to have a strong and healthy team that’s prepared to keep the Solomon Islands safe and serve its people.”

A Vision for a Healthier, Stronger Community

Hency’s vision extends far beyond personal success; it’s about nurturing a healthier and stronger community. He’s on a mission to inspire the youth of Solomon Islands to embrace a life of vitality and wellness.

Hency firmly believes that promoting healthy lifestyles through physical fitness programs is the way forward. He observes the prevalence of diet-related diseases in society and recognizes the need for positive change. His journey began when many young people sought his advice on fitness training and diet while he worked as a gym assistant at the Honiara City Council in 2013.

Hency Charles has utilized his career growth as a series of steps, each rooted in unwavering faith and determination. His four steps to success are simple yet profound: Put God first, practice discipline, remain faithful, and maintain a willingness to learn.

Today, as a youth worker, Hency employs physical fitness programs to engage young people and steer them away from harmful habits. Through it all, his faith remains his guiding light, propelling him forward on a mission to inspire and empower the youth of Honiara and the Solomon Islands to lead healthier, happier lives.

“I believe that everyone has the potential to achieve great things. It’s just a matter of finding your passion and working hard to achieve it.”

In Hency Charles, we find a true inspiration—a testament to the boundless potential that resides within every young person willing to dream and work relentlessly toward their aspirations.
