Proper food safety workshop underway in Lata

A three-day workshop on proper food safety and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) is currently underway in Lata, Temotu Province.

The workshop is being facilitated by officials from the National Public Health laboratory (NPHL) with the support of the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) National Implementation Unit (NIU).

EIF is a multi-donor programme, which supports LDCs to be more active players in the global trading system by helping them tackle supply-side constraints to trade.

A project entitled ‘Solomon Islands Enhancing Capacities for Agriculture Trade’  (ECAT) was approved by the EIF Board in March 2018 is currently in implementation.

Part of the ECATs work plans is to assist the NPHL in carrying out proper food handling trainings, which is essential for agriculture and fisheries products.

The training brought together participants who were identified by the Agriculture office in Lata.

 The SI-ECAT project is designed to contribute to achieving the overall goal of SIG’s National Development Strategy (2011-20) – ‘build better lives for all Solomon Islanders through targeted interventions’

Solomon Islands joined the EIF program in 2006 and has since benefited from 3 EIF projects, namely the

  1. Capacity Building Project,
  2. Tourism Project
  3. Agriculture project, which is  currently being implemented.

The EIF program is an AID for Trade program that Solomon Islands benefited from because of its status as a WTO member and also as a LDC.

The EIF project is housed within the Department of External Trade in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET).
