The National Government this week has announced the country’s participation at the Dubai World Expo 2020 as preparations are currently being activated.
In 2017, the national government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, signed the commitment for Solomon Islands to participate at the Dubai World Expo 2020 which is scheduled for a period of six months between 20th October 2020 and 10th April 2021.
In May 2019, Minister of Foreign Affairs & External Trade, Hon. Jeremiah Manele made a renewed commitment for Solomon Islands participation during a brief visit to Dubai.
Following that renewed commitment, the Cabinet has endorsed Solomon Islands participation at the World Expo and at the same time endorsed Ambassador HE Moses Kouni Mose as the Solomon Islands Commissioner General for the Solomon Islands Pavilion.
The responsibility for the preparation for the Expo lies between three key Government Ministries including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Commerce, Industries, Labor and Immigration.
The theme of the Dubai World Expo 2020 is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”.
Solomon Islands sub theme (under this theme) is “Connecting our Solomon’s with an Ocean of opportunities”, conveying that the country will take advantage of this great opportunity on the global platform for both Government and the private sector of Solomon Islands to explore new trade, investment and tourism potentials’
Solomon Islands is under the “Assisted Country” category and will be receiving assistance from the Dubai World Expo Bureau.
The National Committee Dubai Expo (NCDE) 2020, endorsed by the National Cabinet, has been set up to oversee and ensure that Solomon Islands is well prepared for the World Expo. The composition of the Committee are senior officers from key Government Ministries and with the SI Chamber of Commerce representing the private sector. The chairman is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Mr. Andrew Nihopara.
An operational subcommittee has also been formed to carry out operational tasks as advised by the NCDE 2020.
The three ministries are reassessing their budget allocations to accommodate the costs of participation under their relevant work programs noting that most of the big-ticket items are catered for under the Assistance Package offered by the Government of UAE through the Dubai Expo Bureau.
