The National Government has come out to clear the air relating to the case of the Solomon Islands students studying in Taiwan.

In a statement this week, the National Government has denied media reports that students have been left in the lurch by the Solomon Islands Government following the diplomatic switch last year.

The statement clarified that out of the 103 students studying in Taiwan, 91 of them are Government sponsored whilst 12 are privately sponsored.

“In fact 89 students have secured places in different universities in China, whilst two of them have been advised to reapply because their courses are not offered in China. The 12 students who have opted to remain are in fact self-sponsored and not under government scholarship. In fact China has offered to sponsor the self-sponsored students but was advised by the education ministry that it is not the government’s responsibility,” it said.

The statement further clarified that reports that the Government has neglected students are untrue. “Our students are expected to return home at the end of this month for briefings and orientations before they will depart to their various universities in China in mid-February,” it said.
