Prime Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare and his Fijian counterpart, Hon. Frank Bainimarama have today signed a historical Maritime Boundary Agreement.

The signing is consistent with the intention of all PIF Members to maintain maritime zones in the face of climate change-related sea-level rise, which is set out in the Declaration on Preserving Maritime Zones.

“On this note, let me thank my neighbor, the Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji, the Hon. Josaia Frank Bainimarama for your earlier remarks and providing space to allow for this signing to happen,” Prime Minister Sogavare stated.

The signing of the letter of exchange today compliments the Agreement that irrespective of sea level rise the baseline and outer limits of the two countries maritime zones is cemented in perpetuity.

Prime Minister Sogavare said, today’s signing signifies a celebration of the rolling out of the Ocean chapter of the draft 2050 Strategy while continuing to invest in the sovereignty and sovereign rights of our people over our maritime zones.

Solomon Islands had also concluded maritime agreements with Australia, Papua New Guinea, France, and Vanuatu.
