A senior doctor has warned parents and young people to be vigilant about where they store medicines, alcohol and other harmful substances, following two separate incidents in which three-year-old children were rushed to hospital after accidentally drinking kwaso and petrol.

Speaking in an educational video shared by the Togamae Private Emergency Clinic, Dr Pedical Togamae said both children were treated at hospital and survived due to timely medical intervention.

In the first incident, Dr Togamae said a three-year-old child drank from a bottle of kwaso that had been placed on top of a table, mistaking it for juice.

“The child managed to drink about half of the bottle before becoming irritable, vomiting and crying,” Dr Togamae said. “The child was then rushed to hospital.”

In a second case, another three-year-old child drank petrol that had been stored in a bottle and placed under a table inside the family home.

Dr Togamae said the child had been playing when they noticed the bottle, drank from it, and soon became irritable and began coughing heavily.

“The child was taken to hospital and was saved by the doctors and nurses there,” he said.

Dr Togamae confirmed that both children recovered after receiving medical treatment.

Following the incidents, he strongly appealed to parents and young people to keep harmful substances well out of reach of children.

He also advised families to safely store daily medications, including those for diabetes and high blood pressure.

“Do not place these items on tables or leave them around the house where children can easily reach them,” Dr Togamae said. “It is very important for parents and young people to be responsible in keeping such dangerous items away from children.”
