A one-week training is underway at the Heritage Park Hotel, Honiara to upskill participants on how to monitor and access border crossing— to combat border crimes nationally and regionally.

Director of Immigration Christopher Akosawa has told the participants from our border agencies on the importance of the need to upgrade their skills.

He said the country is experiencing emerging and increasing cases of irregular migration, transnational organized crimes which need trainings to upgrade the skills of the officers.

Akosawa reiterated that the training would benefit “our institutions and strengthen our ability and capacity to look after our country’s borders.”

He told the participants to make use of the one week to get as much knowledge, skills and interact with the specialist on who are here to facilitate the training.

Australian Border Force (ABF) is providing the experts to run the training with funding from DFAT.

Meanwhile, Akosawa quoted from Pope Francis in encouraging the participants quoting: “Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are all born to help each other. No matter how difficult it is . Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.”

The workshop ends on Friday.
