Fourteen (14) new bus shelters have been successfully completed along the Mendana Avenue and Tandai road corridors in Honiara, marking an important improvement to public transport facilities and road safety for commuters and surrounding communities.

The completed shelters are located along both the landward and seaside sections of the Mendana Avenue and Tandai road corridors, providing improved passenger waiting facilities at key locations used daily by public buses, private vehicles, pedestrians and surrounding communities. An additional bus shelter is also proposed opposite the Coral Sea Resort, subject to the availability of additional land at the proposed location and the necessary arrangements being finalised.

The bus shelters were constructed as part of the broader road upgrade works undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP). Their completion provides designated passenger waiting areas along these busy urban transport corridors.

The new facilities provide safer and more convenient waiting spaces for passengers, offering protection from heavy rain and direct sunlight. They will also help improve bus passenger pick-up and drop-off arrangements by providing designated locations for public transport services.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mr. Mike Qaqara, said the successful completion of the 14 bus shelters demonstrates the Government’s commitment to delivering practical infrastructure improvements that respond to the everyday needs of communities.

“Road infrastructure is not only about improving the road itself. We must also consider the people who use these roads every day, including passengers, pedestrians and public transport users. The completion of these bus shelters is an important step towards providing safer, more comfortable and accessible public transport facilities,” Mr. Qaqara said.

He said these facilities represent practical improvements under LMCP that will contribute to a better and safer road environment for communities and commuters using the Mendana Avenue and Tandai road corridors.

The new shelters are expected to benefit residents, workers, students and other commuters who depend on public transport for their daily journeys. By providing dedicated passenger waiting areas along both sides of the road corridors, the facilities will also help reduce the need for passengers to wait directly along the roadside. The public is encouraged to respect and protect the newly completed bus shelters and help keep the facilities clean and in good condition. These are important public assets intended to serve commuters and communities for years to come.

The completion of the 14 bus shelters represents another milestone in LMCP’s efforts to improve road-related infrastructure and support safer, more accessible urban mobility in Honiara.

The road improvement works are being implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development through the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project, with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Solomon Islands.
