HONIARA, Solomon Islands — The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) today (26 October 2026) signed the contract for the Construction of Mbokona Road Bridge and Drainage in Honiara with Capitol Construction Pty Ltd.
The Permanent Secretary of MID, Mr Mike Qaqara, led the signing at MID Headquarters.
The works are part of the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement Project II (CAUSE II), funded by the World Bank and the Australian Government. They include a new reinforced concrete bridge on Mbokona Road and improved drainage, with a stone-pitched channel, a new culvert and gabion walls. The works will reduce flooding and give residents and road users safer access, and are expected to take about nine months.
Before work starts on site, the contractor will attend a pre-construction meeting with the CAUSE II Project Management Unit (PMU) and MID.

A Notice to Proceed will be issued once the contractor has satisfactorily met all readiness checks, including approval of its environmental, social, health and safety plans.
“I am glad to see this progress. Today’s signing signals the mobilisation of civil works under Component 1 of CAUSE II,” said PS Qaqara.
“I call on communities around the project sites for their understanding and cooperation. The works will cause some temporary traffic inconvenience, but they will deliver safer and more resilient infrastructure for Honiara.”
The contractor will put traffic management measures in place, and the public will be told in advance of any road disruptions.
