The government has begun preliminary policy work to explore the possible establishment of a Solomon Islands Defence Force.

Minister of Police and National Security, Hon. Jimson Tanangada, clarified this in Parliament in response to a question from the Leader of the Independent Group and MP for East Malaita, Hon. Deacon Manasseh Maelanga, who sought to confirm whether the government was planning to set up a military force.

Minister Tanangada explained that the government is approaching the matter cautiously, strategically, and transparently as part of the broader implementation of the National Security Strategy, which has already been launched.

“This is not an attempt to militarize our nation but rather a long-term nation-building effort that aims to enhance Solomon Islands’ resilience, sovereignty, and self-reliance,” he said.

He added that the intent is to develop a defence capability that would enable the country to better respond to natural disasters, border security challenges, and maritime threats — areas that currently stretch the capacity of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF).

“The rationale is grounded on the principles of self-reliance and sovereignty,” Tanangada emphasized. “In principle, the security of Solomon Islands must be owned, led, and sustained by Solomon Islanders.”

He said many Solomon Islanders have expressed their desire for the country to be able to defend its borders and respond to crises without relying on external interventions.

“The establishment of a defence force is a strategic and forward-looking investment. It seeks to fill capability gaps in national maritime surveillance, border protection, disaster response, humanitarian relief, and national emergency support,” he said.

Tanangada further clarified that the proposed defence force would complement — not replace — the RSIPF.

“It’s a non-policing role, focused on national and maritime security, humanitarian and disaster response, and national emergency support in circumstances exceeding policing capacity,” the Minister told Parliament.

However, he noted that the establishment of the Solomon Islands Defence Force may not take place during the life of the current 12th Parliament.
