The Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC) has assured the public that all critical electoral and voter registration data remain secure, despite the devastating fire that destroyed its headquarters at Vavaya Ridge early Wednesday morning.

Chief Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Jasper Highwood Anisi, confirmed in a statement on Thursday night that no digital records have been lost.

“All electoral and voter registration data are safe and intact because they are securely stored off-site and backed up through the Solomon Islands Government ICT Network (SIGnet),” Mr. Anisi said.

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly to the blaze, but the office building was completely gutted. Police investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.

Mr. Anisi expressed the Commission’s deep sadness at the destruction of its headquarters but said the greatest relief was that no lives were lost and no injuries reported. “The safety and wellbeing of our staff remain our highest priority,” he stressed.

Despite the loss, the Commission has already taken steps to ensure continuity of services and maintain momentum in preparations for the 2028 Joint National and Provincial Elections. Staff are operating from temporary workspaces while discussions continue to secure a new office facility.

“We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy. However, we want to assure the people of Solomon Islands that our work will continue, and our mandate remains firm. Our commitment to delivering free, fair, and transparent elections is unwavering,” Mr. Anisi said.

The Commission has extended its appreciation to the public, government leaders, donor partners, regional EMBs, and stakeholders for their sympathy and solidarity during this difficult time.
