7th suspect in mining company robbery arrested

Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) have arrested another suspect in relation to the Winwin Gold Mining Company robbery incident that happened on 9 December 2020 in Central Guadalcanal.

The 34-year-old male suspect was arrested at his home village in Malaita yesterday (24 January 2021) and flown to Honiara on a helicopter. He is now in custody at the Henderson Police Station.

Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Guadalcanal Province Superintendent Edwin Sevoa says, “The arrest was successfully done with assistance from members of the community who supplied the information that led to the apprehension of the suspect. He is now in police custody awaiting further dealings and a remand application.”

Superintendent Sevoa explains, “It is alleged that the suspect is among the group of men who entered the Winwin Gold Mining Company premises in Central Guadalcanal on 9 December 2020 and removed one gold bar weighing three kilograms, another gold bar weighing 1.7 kilograms, and took the sum of $140,000.00 cash and 15 mobile phones.”

 “The investigation into the matter continues. So far there has been no recovery of the money and gold bars allegedly stolen during the robbery. Only two mobile phones have been recovered so far.”

“I call on the other suspects allegedly involved in the incident to surrender themselves to police. You will not hide and police will keep on hunting for you,” says Superintendent Sevoa
