A suspect who retaliated after his phone was snatched by five youths, one of whom he floored and died in hospital two days later, has been arrested by police.
The case has attracted widespread anger on facebook last week with most people siding with the suspect.
Police today in a statement says the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at Naha Police Station have arrested a 23-year-old male suspect in relation to the murder in east Honiara on 18 June 2021.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Honiara City Superintendent John Matamaru confirmed that the suspect was arrested around 6pm on 18 June 2021 at west Kola ridge. He added that the arrest was successfully done after investigators have spoken with the suspect. Police picked up the suspect at his house where he was formally arrested and is now placed in custody.
RISPF says the suspect has been charged with murder in contrary to section 200 of the penal code. He is remanded at the Rove Correctional Center on 19 June 2021 and will appear before the Honiara Central Magistrates’ Court on 2 July 2021.
An initial report says that early in the morning about 3am on Saturday 12 June 2021, an argument over a mobile phone broke out between the deceased and the suspect at the Kukum area. The deceased was amongst five others who snatched a mobile phone from the suspect and his cousin brother. The deceased and his group attacked the suspect and as a result he fell on the ground as he was outnumbered. However even though he was alone after his cousin fled the scene he kept finding and as a result hit the deceased’s head who fell on the road unconsciously. The suspect then escaped while the deceased’s friends chased him.
The deceased was assisted by his friends back to Bua valley area after the incident and though he survived he later died in hospital two days later on June 14th.
