Honiara, Solomon Islands, 22 May 2025 Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele today officially opened the 79th General Session of the Association of South Pacific Airlines (ASPA) at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara, welcoming aviation leaders from across the Pacific region.

Themed “Enhancing Regional Air Connectivity and Infrastructure,” the event brings together airline executives, industry stakeholders, and regional partners to discuss key issues including safety, sustainability, passenger rights, and tourism.

Prime Minister Manele reaffirmed the Government of National Unity and Transparency’s (GNUT) strong commitment to advancing aviation as a vital driver of national and regional development. He highlighted government initiatives that align with GNUT’s policies on infrastructure improvement, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

“As a nation of over 900 islands, the Solomon Islands understands aviation’s role as a lifeline for our communities, connecting our people, supporting tourism, and driving economic growth.”

He noted that the government is dedicated to advancing aviation infrastructure through initiatives such as airport upgrades and policy reforms, while fostering regional partnerships to enhance connectivity. Solomon Airlines, the national carrier, exemplifies this commitment by connecting the islands and supporting national development goals.

Two of the three core development programs of the Ministry of Communication and Aviation focus on international and provincial airport developments. Munda Airport in Western Province has been upgraded to accommodate international flights and was recently enhanced with a new airport terminal. Several other provincial airports are undergoing upgrades, and planning for the Henderson International Airport extension and upgrade is currently underway. These developments, while aimed at supporting national progress, will also boost regional connectivity in line with the theme of this gathering.

Alongside infrastructure development, the Solomon Islands Government is prioritizing the signing of Air Services Agreements to facilitate inter-airline arrangements that will expand the reach of Solomon Airlines regionally and globally.

“Our national carrier, Solomon Airlines, while it is confronted with challenges as a relatively small airline, it is supporting the national government in its efforts to connect our islands and communities, enable tourism and economic development. I am informed your programme will also include a tour of their facilities. I hope other airlines and industry stakeholders will also look for opportunities for partnership with Solomon Airlines.”

Reflecting on the importance of regional cooperation and innovation, the Prime Minister noted that this General Session is a testament to the power of collaboration in shaping the future of Pacific aviation.

“Together, we can ensure aviation remains a catalyst for economic growth, connecting our Pacific nations and positioning us as a vibrant global destination.”

He encouraged delegates to adopt new technologies and sustainable practices, consistent with both GNUT’s National Climate Change Policy 2023–2032 and global aviation goals such as IATA’s Fly Net Zero by 2050.

“I encourage you to pursue partnerships and champion sustainability that supports our shared environmental priorities,” he added.

Prime Minister Manele expressed his gratitude to ASPA, Solomon Airlines, and event sponsors for their support in hosting this important gathering in Honiara. He expressed confidence that the discussions will help build a stronger and more connected Pacific aviation sector.
