Police have confirmed that there are people being called in by investigators to be questioned and their statements taken as they dive deep into the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP) Report which was submitted to police by the Office of the Auditor General.

After being probed on the matter today by the media, commissioner of police Mostyn Mangau confirmed that there were people being pulled into Rove by investigators for their statements and underwent questioning.

“At the moment there are no people (persons) being charged but they have been pulled in for investigation,” he told journalists.

He could not confirm how many people have been questioned by police.

The ESP Audit report had found widespread abuse of state funds targeted to businesses as part of their recovery from the onslaught of COVID-19. A good portion of the more than $300m fund was in imprests which the report found to be extensively abused.

In February this year, the OAG referred the report for investigation by police.

Today, Mangau confirmed receiving the report and they are now investigating it.

He expected progress report from his investigators in the third week of May.
