The new Western Extension of the Honiara’s Central Market will be completed next month, creating undercover space for 100 vendors.

Local workers have been busy installing the large roof and are now finishing the concrete bench tables and other works in time for the opening.

Australia is partnering with Honiara City Council to expand Central Market, bringing a large section undercover from the sun and rain.

The SBD10 million project, which is being delivered using local builder Tropic Group Builders, has created over 30 local jobs during construction.

Australia’s acting High Commissioner Mr Andrew Schloeffel said he was delighted to see work progress smoothly, led by the project’s skilled local workforce.

“The expanded market creates a larger, improved space for vendors to earn money to support their family’s education and other needs, and for shoppers to buy their weekly fresh fruit and vegetables.”

“It’s significant that the construction itself has created months of work for local suppliers and workers, including key roles for women who are site engineer and site manager for the project.”

Mr Schloeffel acknowledged the support of the Honiara City Council and market master who have kept vendors informed and ensured public safety during construction.

“People are excited to be soon selling their produce undercover and off the ground, and I thank them for their patience as we get this infrastructure project done using local workers and not cutting corners on quality,” Mr Schloeffel said.

Australia’s markets redevelopment program is supporting the construction of new or refurbished markets across six provinces including Malaita, Guadalcanal, Central, Isabel, Makira and Western Province to support social and economic development opportunities for around the country.
