MP for East Honiara is new deputy speaker of National Parliament

The MP for East Honiara Morris Toiraena has been declared as the new deputy speaker of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands.

He stood unopposed for the position at the close of nomination yesterday.

Toiraena was nominated by the MP for Gizo/Kolobangara and the Minister of Police Jimson Tanangada.

Being the only candidate nominated for the position he was declared as the new deputy speaker by the Clerk of National Parliament, Jefferson Hallu.

In response to his appointment, Toiraena said he was honoured and humbled to be elected as the new deputy speaker.

He thanked his colleagues for the trust and confidence they have in him.

Toiraena admitted that it is a new position and responsibility adding it will be hard but he’s ready to embrace the challenge ahead.

He replaces Cathy Nori, the MP for Maringe Kokota who is now the new minister for Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs.

Both the Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition have welcomed and congratulate Toiraena on his new appointment.

Toiraena is the deputy speaker to the current speaker Patteson John Oti, who is serving his two- term as the head of the legislature.
