The Makira Ulawa Council of Women has for the first time met as it rallied support to the women and children of Nasuahu in South Star Harbour area in their fight against illegal loggers.
Women and children of the community were creating human walls to stop what they described as illegal loggers entering their land.
President of Makira Ulawa Provincial Council of Women Edith Kaoho told SBMOnline that after receiving a text from the villagers she mobilized authorities in Kirakira to meet with the concerned women from Nasuahu.
As a result, she said a meeting was organized and took place in Kirakira this week.
Kaoho said the issue has drawn the attention of the Makira provincial council of women because it involves women and children.
She said as a responsible body they support the women of Nasuahu asthey are mandated to advocate, empower women and girls to stand up for their rights in alignment to the National Policies, Elimination of Violence Against women and girls’ policy 2021 and Affirmative Action Strategy 2022.
“Logging related issues that involves women and girls is a big concern as logging exploitation is beyond control in this province,” she told SBM.
The meeting was attended by the Provincial reps, women church leaders, MUPCW Executives, women community leaders, women from Nasuahu, stakeholders, police and men from Yato conservation organisations.
Kaoho highlighted that it may just be a one-day meeting but it was a success as it highlighted and opened a way forward to addressing an issue involving women and children as a result of logging exploitation.
