Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Canada, Her Excellency Mrs. Jane Waetara has presented her Letter of Introduction to the Canadian Prime Minister Justine Trudeau on Wednesday 19th June, 2024 in Ottawa.

Upon receiving High Commissioner Waetara, Prime Minister Trudeau acknowledged the friendly relations between Canada and Solomon Islands and expressed Canada’s strong commitment to support Small Islands Developing States like Solomon Islands.

High Commissioner Waetara conveyed to Prime Minister Trudeau, Solomon Islands steadfast commitment to its bilateral relations with Canada and to deepen engagement in priority areas of mutual interest.

She further expressed gratitude to Government of Canada for its assistance and support in areas of climate change adaptation, fisheries surveillance, labour mobility and through the Canada Local Fund Initiative.

While in Ottawa, High Commissioner Waetara also met with senior officials of Ministry of Global Affairs and the Department of Fisheries.

Discussions touched on ongoing bilateral engagements and opportunities Solomon Islands would like to pursue cooperation in particularly in labour mobility, fisheries, marine conservation, strengthening climate finance accessibility, climate change adaptation, education and partnerships between Canadian institutions and Solomon Islands National University.

As part of Canada’s renewed focus on the Pacific Islands region, greater effort is being given to strengthening and increasing Canada’s engagement with Pacific Islands countries including Solomon Islands.

High Commissioner, Mrs Waetara is based in New York as Solomon Islands Permanent Representative to United Nations, with accreditation to the United States of America and Canada.
